MONTEREY, Calif. — October 29, 2026. For households bordering the greenbelts of Fisherman’s Flats, the local 2026 NCIP proposal is about a familiar problem: the buildup of brush and other potentially combustible material near homes and open space. Neighborhood nomination FF-01 seeks recurring fuel removal from Fisherman’s Flats greenbelts and Fisherman’s Flats Park.
What the nomination requests
The submitted scope calls for annual removal of fire-hazard material. It is a neighborhood maintenance request rather than a report of an active wildfire or an evacuation. The October 28 project list gives FF-01 no separate preliminary cost estimate, so assigning it an invented dollar price would misrepresent the public record.
Why city staff want a larger combined project
Monterey staff recommend combining FF-01 with MN-02, Multi-Neighborhood Fuel Reduction, instead of treating every park and greenbelt request as a wholly separate city grant. The broader MN-02 approach addresses fallen trees, underbrush and unhealthy vegetation across forested lands. A combined program might coordinate work across properties, but the meeting packet does not guarantee which Fisherman’s Flats areas would receive funding or how often crews would visit.
What happens next for this neighborhood?
The committee’s November 18 voting session will rank proposed projects; project selection and actual vegetation work require later decisions. Residents should distinguish the requested annual maintenance from any current fire warning. For genuine wildfire alerts, use CAL FIRE’s incident list and official Monterey County emergency notices.
Official record: City of Monterey, NCIP Committee October 28, 2026 second-review agenda packet, project FF-01 (PDF). The city lists November 18, 2026 NCIP project ranking as an upcoming committee meeting. Cost figures are preliminary estimates, not awarded funding.
